Micro-mobility isn’t just a trend, it’s a competitive advantage - if you get it right!

For decades, fleet managers have perfected the art of running vans. The playbook is clear:

  • You know exactly which dealers and leasing companies to call.

  • Service intervals, warranties (2 years+/60,000+ miles), running costs, insurance, and road tax are routine.

  • Drivers, depot teams, and loading processes are second nature.

Switching from a Mercedes Sprinter to a Ford Transit? Easy, you know the drill.

But introduce micro-mobility for example, cargobikes and the game changes. Even experienced fleet managers are pushed outside their comfort zone. It feels unfamiliar. And change is hard.

Suddenly, new questions arise:

  • What about battery range and can batteries be swapped out?

  • How and where do we charge them? What will insurance underwriters think about this?

  • What if a cargo bike breaks down, can it be fixed roadside, and by whom?

  • How do we recover it after a major fault, or an RTA?

  • Do we outsource maintenance or build the expertise in-house?

  • How do we integrate small, lightweight vehicles into route optimisation systems?

  • What adjustments are needed for loading processes?

And it doesn’t stop with the fleet team. Other departments need answers too:

  • HR & Recruitment: Can we transition our van drivers? How do we train van drivers to ride safely? Who designs the training programme? How do we recruit bike riders? What does a rider interview look like? How do we test for competency?

  • Finance: What’s the true Total Cost of Ownership? CAPEX? OPEX?

  • What are the productivity gains and how do we benchmark them?

  • Risk & Insurance: How do we insure a new vehicle type?

  • Operations: If we transport hot, chilled or frozen goods, how do we maintain temperature control? And what’s the certification process?

All these questions are valid and with the right approach, all can be answered.

Adopting cargobikes isn’t as simple as swapping vans, it requires detailed advanced planning.
